Black light made starlight, white goggles and iridescent paint from prior games on the walls.

Who was that? There? Mr. Singleterry or Mr. Cooper?

“I got him,” her dad scream-whispered. “Quick, Didi! Cover my back!”

Heart pounding, Didi set herself behind her father’s voice and

SHOOT!

Her dad got Mr. Singleterry in one.

“Come on, Didi! Step it up!” her dad yelled beside her. “Am I playing alone? Cooper’s right there, for God’s sake!”

Where? How? Where—oh! Was that Mr. Cooper shrinking behind that boulder?

SHOOT!

She got him.

“High five!” said her dad and he slapped her hand with his own. All four men on the other side down. Didi and her dad, the two of them unstoppable. Didi’d never had so much fun in her life. The focus, the fear. Her heart pounding with terror, the paint and the chase, adrenaline pouring through her with every shot.

“Well done!” her dad cried, and slapped her shoulder.

Didi cried out. She’d forgotten that blue on her coveralls. She hadn’t noticed the pain while they were playing, but now it hurt much more than even before.
